HiPath 8000

Feature Summary

HiPath 8000 delivers unique value through its architecture, functional capabilities and security features:

Architecture
Softswitch In traditional circuit switched networks, hardware & software are not independent. A "softswitch" means decoupling the underlying computing hardware from the pure switching application. A softswitch architecture by itself is virtually limitlessly scalable, with its performance dependent only upon the underlying hardware and the availability of components such as gateways and applications.
Non-proprietary operating system The base system software runs on Linux. This is combined with cluster control software to run all parts of the system as a redundant unit.
Resilient Telco Platform (RTP)

Is a distributed computing and fault tolerant middleware platform providing services that allow applications to be implemented in line with the following important architectural principles:

  • Data resiliency (saving of calls through failures; call and billing records remain active)
  • Location transparency (aliased redundant process instances make the distributed architecture fault tolerant and scalable at the software level)
Stable Server Platform The HiPath 8000 software runs on highly reliable fault-tolerant industry-standard servers, providing carrier-grade availability through its unique software architecture.
Scalability The HiPath 8000 is highly scalable, with configurations available for networks of up to 100,000 users per node (and virtually unlimited users in a network) and down to as few as 300 users, with the same great user and network features across the whole size range. For the 300-5,000 user configuration redundancy is optional, and the media server and management systems are also integrated onto the same computing platform for optimal cost efficiency
Media Servers
  • The HiPath 8000 uses Media Servers to provide Tones and Announcements.  These can be either external to the system (for larger customers), or an integrated Media Server is available for 300-5,000 user systems.
  • The external Media Servers can also provide other applications, such as messaging and conferencing.
  • The integrated Media Server is extremely economic for 300-5,000 user systems because it runs on the same server as the HiPath 8000 software.
Open Applications Interfaces
  • Open interfaces, particularly SIP and SIP.Q make it easy to add HiPath and other applications, and this provides great flexibility for customers to build the network configuration that best support their business.
  • Siemens uses open interfaces to support partners' applications, such as  ACD systems
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) SIP is an open application-layer protocol for the establishment, modification and termination of telephony, conferencing presence, events notification & other functions over an IP network.
Deployment and Migration The HiPath 8000 can be deployed as both an overlay network with smooth migration of existing users, or as a complete replacement for traditional PBX systems. The global license model eases deployments and minimizes costs, and the support of existing Siemens systems as Survivable Media Gateways, ensures investment protection.

Security & Reliability
Carrier-Grade Reliability

HiPath 8000 has no single point of failure and offers proven 99.999% availability. In the unlikely event of a total communications failure to the main HiPath 8000, there are contingency measures:

  • Survivable Media Gateways (SMG) bridge the gap to PSTN-supporting different trunking protocols, maintaining existing calls and providing local, basic operations
  • The HiPath 8000 Edge System is an independent mini-HiPath capable of all softswitch call-control functions to provide uninterrupted communications services until such time as connectivity to the host HiPath 8000 is restored
IPSec Baseline Enhancements IPsec (IP security) is a standard for the encryption and authentication of IP packets to secure IP communications. HiPath 8000 enhances IPSec to provide IPSec/IKE (Internet Key Exchange) support to secure HiPath 8000 interfaces. A new  iNMC GUI is provided to simplify the provisioning of IPSec connections and policies.
Defenses against Denial of Service (DoS) Attacks Provides a mechanism to reduce the impact of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks on the system. A host based IDS (Intrusion Detection System) has been introduced to monitor incoming traffic in parallel to the traffic being sent to normal application processing. When incoming traffic from an IP address exceeds the provisioned threshold, all traffic from that IP address is temporarily blocked. Two provisioned thresholds are provided, a default threshold that is used for most traffic (e.g. low threshold for end user traffic) and a second threshold that is used for specific IP addressed (e.g. higher threshold for server traffic). This feature provides alarms when the system starts discarding messages due to DoS message filtering as well as administrable options, allowing the customer to customize the DoS defense mechanism thresholds.
Account & Password Management Security Provides more flexibility to administrators in defining password format (complexity rules), password aging, and password reuse policies as well as account related policies such as disabling dormant accounts.
